In the southeast corner of Ecuador, adjacent to the Peruvian border— the Chito community in Zamora Chinchipe, is a vibrant hub of coffee production. Cosmel Merino, representing this group of dedicated farmers, sheds light on the lives and efforts of 55 coffee producers. The community, predominantly male-led with 30% of farms managed by women, operates small farms averaging 4 acres in size.
Despite facing market challenges, where their produce was previously confined to Ecuador's national market, the resilience of Chito's coffee growers shines through. They manage to produce about 1.5 million pounds of coffee each year. With CafExporto's recent involvement, providing new seed varieties and improved cultivation techniques, there's an air of optimism. These changes are projected to increase coffee production significantly, adding half a million pounds over the next three years.
Thank you to CafExporto for information and images from Chito.
